The Dow edged lower by 51.29. The Nasdaq Composite lost 14.88. And the S&P 500 finished down 8.72.

Citi Investment Research analyst upgraded shares of Netflix Inc. (NFLX | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) from "hold" to "buy" citing the stock's recent pullback. Netflix earned a PowerRatings upgrade to 8 last Thursday and gained more than 8% on Monday.

General Motors (GM | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) announced on Monday that it would be eliminating its Pontiac division by the end of 2010 and its Saturn unit by the end of 2009. The automaker also said that it was offering equity stakes to bondholders in lieu of cash in an effort to stave off bankruptcy.

Among the companies reporting quarterly earnings on Tuesday are two health care related corporations: Pfizer (PFE | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) and Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating). Pfizer is expected to announce quarterly EPS of 48 cents. Per share earnings of 47 cents are what analysts are expecting to hear from Bristol-Myers.

U.S. Steel (X | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) is expected to announce earnings per share loss of 1.67 before the bell Tuesday morning.

Scheduled to report earnings after the market closes on Tuesday is Sun Microsystems, which recently agreed to be acquired by Oracle Corporation (ORCL | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating).

Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) soared by more than 8% late in trading on Monday due not to the concerns over the swine flu, but because of the company's success in fighting Hepatitis C.
