The Dow ended the day up 246.27. The Nasdaq Composite added 61.88. And the S&P 500 finished higher by 31.40.

Both Bank of America (BAC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) and Wells Fargo (WFC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) soared higher by more than 30% and 20%, respectively on Thursday due to surprisingly strong earnings and word that all 19 of the banks currently taking the administration's "stress tests" will pass those tests.

Shares of Wal-Mart (WMT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) retreated on an otherwise bullish day on Thursday due to disappointing same-store sales. Rival Target (TGT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), by contrast, saw its shares rally by more than 5% on the day.with sales that were not as weak as expected.
