The fear index VIX spiked higher today as worries of the viability of the economic recovery spooked the stock market. Negative housing data added to the bearish day. Word of CIT group obtaining a multi billion dollar rescue loan did little to lift the pessimistic overtones. The DJIA collapsed 119.48, the tech heavy Nasdaq fell 56.48 and the broad based S&P 500 gave back 26.78 to 1042.63.

Cereal king pin, Kellogg (K | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), has traders looking for a third quarter EPS of 83 cents prior to the open.

Before trading starts, Exxon Mobile (XOM | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), will announce their 3rd quarter results with an expected EPS of $1.04.
