Among the companies reporting quarterly earnings after the close on Wednesday were Starbucks (SBUX | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) and Visa (V | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating). Starbucks reported per share earnings of 16 cents, topping analyst estimates by a penny. EPS of 73 cents from Visa beating analyst estimates by eight cents.

An upgrade of the group rating for the banking sector by a major global investment bank helped spur buying in shares of both Citigroup (C | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) and Bank of America (BAC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), both of which had become increasingly oversold over the past few days. Citigroup added nearly 8% on the day. Bank of America rallied more than 6%.
