The Dow gained 70.49. The Nasdaq Composite added 6.09. And the S&P 500 ended the day up 8.37.

Amazon.com (AMZN | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) reported quarterly per share earnings of 41 cents after the market closed on Thursday. The Internet retailer beat estimates by ten cents.

Also announcing after the bell on Thursday was American Express (AXP | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) and Microsoft (MSFT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating). American Express reported per share earnings of 32 cents, smashing analyst estimates by nearly 20 cents. Microsoft met analyst expectations with a quarterly EPS of 39 cents.

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said that Bank of America (BAC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) had been pressured by both former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and current Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke not to pull out of their deal to acquire Merrill Lynch.

Among the companies reporting earnings Friday morning before the market opens is Ford Motor Company (F | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), which is expected to report EPS of -1.26, and Schlumberger (SLB | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), which is expected to announce per share earnings of 77 cents.

Closing higher for a third day in a row and up more than 19% on Thursday was Capital One Financial (COF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating).
