The Dow gained 95.81. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day up 43.64. And the S&P 500 closed ahead by 13.24.

Google (GOOG | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) reported quarterly earnings after the close on Thursday that were better than analysts had expected. Thursday marked the stock's second consecutive close above the 200-day moving average in more than a year.

"RST" is the ticker symbol for Rosetta Stone (RST | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) which debuted on Thursday with a rally of more than 40%.

Citigroup (C | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) is among the companies announcing quarterly earnings Friday morning. Analysts are expecting an earnings per share loss of 24 cents. Also reporting before the bell Friday morning are Mattel Inc. (MAT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), which is expected to report a loss of 13 cents per share, and Overstock.com (OSTK | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), which is expected to announce an EPS loss of 26 cents.
