The Dow closed lower by 89.68. The Nasdaq Composite slipped 25.15. And the S&P 500 ended the day down 9.48.

Reporting quarterly earnings Monday morning is Barrick Gold (ABX | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating). Analysts are expecting EPS of 30 cents from the mining company.

A pair of retailers are also reporting earnings Friday before the market opens. JC Penny (JCP | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) is expected to announce EPS of 92 cents. And analysts are looking for earnings per share of 0.12 from Lowes (LOW | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating).

Monsanto (MON | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) reported that it expected strong profit growth from its seed and genetics programs through the year 2012.

Among the increased holdings in the billionaire George Soros' Soros Fund are commodity stocks Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (POT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) and Brazilian oil company, Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PBR | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating).
