MAR'07 S&P500 ** CRUNCH ** - The MAR'07 S&P500 took a tumble and will remain vulnerable to the offer with all trading below 1414.50. Sell strength against here. A breach of 1415-1414.50 puts the index back in a big messy digest up to 1428 and 1439.75. Here again, selling is expected. 1459.75 is the high point for the expected consolidation.

- Key off the 1401 Directional for an indication of the session tone. Below here, the offers are aggressive down to 1387.50. Use caution. This break has the potential to feed on itself, targeting 1378.50-1374.50 on any new weakness. Expect a reaction. 1351 and 1333.50 are the extended targets for any sustained decline. 1291.50 is the current extreme.

Follow-up on this afternoon's gap down in the market

Regarding today's afternoon plunge, a CNBC commentator notes that at first traders on the NYSE floor thought it was a bad print. Then traders believe that a series of trades were queued up against the curbs, and when the curbs were released, then the Dow gapped down another 200 points in a matter of minutes. Says traders have never seen such an instantaneous gap down... It's worth noting that at least for the moment, the Dow seems to have held its initial test of its Dec low of 12,090 (see 15:08 comment)... Dow down ~400, S&P down ~44, Nasdaq down ~86.

Follow-up on Chinese stock market sell-off

Dow Jones reports that the biggest drop in China's benchmark stock index in a decade sent ripples through other Asian markets, in the latest sign of the emerging global importance of the country's economy and financial system. A day after the Shanghai Composite Index hit a new record high, it plunged 8.8% on Tuesday to 2771.79, on what analysts said were widespread efforts by investors to cash in on big gains and avoid any govt attempts to cool the markets. Tuesday's drop was the biggest in percentage terms since an 8.9% fall on Feb. 18, 1997 that was trigged by rumors that then paramount leader Deng Xiaoping had died, a day before he actually did. There were no new policies announced Tuesday, and few analysts see the one-day fall as a turning point for China's stock market. In fact, most signs suggest investors have returned from last week's Chinese New Year holidays keen to hold more stock.

5 Undiscovered Growth Stocks

For all of the talk over why you should never overpay for a stock, the plain truth is that most of the 10 best stocks of the past decade were expensive in 1997. That's why I think you should always supplement a portfolio of cheap tortoises with some high-octane hares.

And now may be a great time to go shopping. Evidence says a growth-stock rally is under way right now.
