Fed hikes rates as Greenspan leaves stage

The committee signaled further rate hikes could come to keep inflation at bay.
The FOMC said inflation was low and inflation expectations remained contained. However, slack in the economy was disappearing, and could add to inflationary pressures, the committee said.
In its statement, the committee removed language that suggested further rate hikes would be measured. The committee also said further increases "may be needed," a change from wording in December that said further increases would "likely" be needed.

CME Posts Higher Earnings

Earnings rose 34% from a year ago in the Chicago Mercantile Exchange's (CME:NYSE - commentary - research - Cramer's Take) fourth quarter, beating estimates thanks to brisk derivatives volume.

The CME, whose shares are up 10% in January after rising 62% in 2005, earned $76.3 million, or $2.18 a share, in the quarter, compared with $57.8 million, or $1.64 a share, a year ago. Sales rose 24% from a year ago to $233 million.

January gains signal strong year for stocks

If the January barometer holds, 2006 should be a positive year. Stocks jump, despite higher oil. Earnings, housing offer confidence, but George Soros is bearish. Who was the best Fed chairman for stocks?

Absent a disaster on Monday and Tuesday of next week, the January barometer suggests 2006 will be a good year for stocks.

According to the Stock Trader's Almanac, a down January for the S&P 500 has signaled a down or flat year without exception since 1950. Friday's strong rally should help the market avoid a bad first month. A positive January almost always means a positive year.
